Just a quickie ahead of today’s friendly — as expected and reported a few days ago, Tottenham Hotspur and Luton Town have announced the transfer of Irish goalkeeper Josh Keeley.

The transfer fee was not disclosed, but previous reporting had suggested that Spurs will have BOTH a sell-on clause and a buy-back clause in Keeley’s contract, which speaks to how highly they rate the young keeper. Keeley had an outstanding loan in League One last season with Leyton Orient, and now join Luton, who were relegated from the Championship last season.
Luton’s relegation likely means that they’ll be one of the better clubs in League One and makes a promotion back to the second flight more likely. So this is a pretty decent loan for Keeley, who has already proven he can hack it in the third division. If Luton do get promoted this season, it makes it more likely that Keeley might be snapped up by a Premier League club in the future, and Spurs think he has the ability to make it as a Premier League footballer.
But the time is not right for him at Spurs. He’s firmly behind Guglielmo Vicario and Antonin Kinsky (the latter of whom is the same age as Keeley) and the fact that he will not be home grown or club trained means he’s also behind Brandon Austin, though he’s likely a keeper than Austin. Having a couple of options to either bring him back or get some money down the road for him is smart.
